OBITUARY: Deseret News, May 26, 1984
Edward Durant Smith, 80, died May 24, 1984. Born March 6, 1904 in Salt Lake City to Arthur E. and Fannie D. Smith. Married Marieta Jane Tracy, July 17, 1931 in New York City. Mr. Smith was educated in Salt Lake City Schools, graduating from East High School. He attended Westminister College, the University of Utah and graduated in Civil Engineering from Stanford University in 1927. He started his business career with Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company in New York City, and was manager of the diesel Engine Division prior to returning to Salt Lake in 1939 to join his father in the machinery division of the Lang Company. On January 1, 1960, he left Lang Company to form Smith Machinery Co., Inc. With his son. He served Smith Machinery Co., as president until his retirement in 1931 when he became Chairman of the Board, a position he held until his death. He also served 3 years on the Board of Directors of the American Machine Tool Distributors Association. An active mason for nearly 60 years, he was a past master of Mt. Moriah Lodge No. 2, 33rd degree honorary of the Scottish Rite, a noble of ElKaloh Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., being a member of the patrol for 20 years. He has served as a trustee of the Mt. Moriah Lodge and the shrine for 26 years. Mr. Smith also was on the Masonic Temple Association Board of Directors and was an Emeritus Member of the Board of the Intermountian Unit Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children. He was a charter member of the Salt Lake Chapter Order of DeMolay, and received the DeMoley Legion of Honor. An avid sportsman, he was a member of Newstate Duck Club, Fort Douglas/Hidden Valley Country Club, Gyro International, Sons of the American Revolution, and a former member of the Salt Lake Rotary Club.
Survived by his wife, Marieta, son, Tracy D. And daughter-in-law, Jeniel E. Smith, grandsons, Jeffrey (his wife Denise) and Clark, granddaughters, Susan Williams, (her husband Charles), Jennifer and Kiersten and great granddaughter, Ashley, sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lee L. (Harriet) Lovinger, Jr., brother-in-law, Mr. C.W. Nortz all of Salt Lake City. Brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. (Roberta) Reineman, of Denver, Colorado; preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. C. W. (Laura) Nortz.
Public Masonic Service 12 noon, Tuesday, May 29, 1984 Masonic Temple, 650 East South Temple, Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends wishing to may make contributions to Intermountain Unit Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children. Funeral directors, Eastman’s Evans & Early.
