Although I can't be sure when, I do know that the name comes from Mac Giolla Dea, meaning servant of God. Judging from this I imagine the original Gildeas could have been defenders of the church (RC) in some way. The name was most numerour in Donegal (about 37 listings in Griffiths) and likewise in Mayo.
