Don Lujan showing some nice moves with three cups.

The topic of our November meeting was “Cups & Balls.” Everyone was encouraged to show their favorite cups & balls routine. It was lots of fun and quite a few of our members were brave enough to show their cups & balls moves. Len Swinyer showed us some unusually large cups that he has collected over the years.

Eric Wanner was the first to actually perform his version of the cups & balls. Eric’s finale was a “real lemon.” The Great Dayn showed us some of his moves. Steven Clark showed us his version of the cups and peanut butter cups. Ed Rock performed Michael Ammar’s version of the cups & balls.

Ron Seward broke away from the traditional performance of cups and balls by showing us a one-cup & ball routine with a tiny chop cup. Don Lujan showed us some nice moves with three cups.

Jim Davis' Cups and Bullets

Last to perform was Jim Davis, who showed us his award-winning performance of “Leather Cups & Bullets.”

Overall, it was another enjoyable Tuesday evening at IBM ring 193 and a great opportunity to mix ideas with other magicians.

Member Spotlight

Ed Rock

Ed Rock was our member spotlight for the November meeting. For his first trick, Ed performed “Point of No Return.” A card was selected by using two cards. The first card indicated the suit and the second selected card indicated the value. Both cards were dealt off the top of the deck slowly and fairly. In the end, the correct card appeared inside of his pocket as a jumbo card. For his second trick, Ed performed David Roth’s “Three Ball Routine.”

Ed concluded his spotlight performance by showing us a trick called “Title Bout,” a gambler versus magician card effect in which a magician attempts to find four of a kind from a shuffled deck. To further complicate things, the deck is shuffled face up into face down. One by one, the aces are found by simply cutting the deck, until three of four aces are on the table. However, when Ed tried to find the last ace, he found a king instead. That was not a problem, however, because Ed simply changed the aces into kings, showing that he did, in the end, cut to four of a kind from a shuffled deck. For the finale, Ed showed that somehow every card in the deck had turned face down, except for those four aces.
