“Fix-a-Trick” Night

20000919.pdf

The topic of our September meeting was “Fix-a-Trick” night. Members were encouraged to bring any tricks or moves that they’ve been struggling with and get advice from others in the Ring.

The first to ask a question, was Dayn Holbrook. Dayn, attending for his first time, got some help on back palming. The group suggested that Dayn (who is young and has small hands), try using smaller, bridge size cards. Another suggestion was to use Bee brand cards instead of Bicycle brand cards to avoid flashing the white border on the back of the Bicycle cards. Jim Davis got some help on how to end Jazz Aces. Anthony White got some help about performing needle through balloon. Ed Rock asked the group about a card flourish (Daryl’s Hot Shot) that he had seen and wanted to learn but didn’t know the name of the move or where to learn it.

Participation was great and some very clever suggestions were discussed. One of the benefits of IBM membership, as stated in the organization’s own words, is “to allow you to gather monthly&ldots;to practice the newest effects or discuss the latest topics in magic.” It was a great night to be part of that experience.

New Members Join Ring 193

During our September meeting, four individuals auditioned for membership in the Ring, all of whom were teens.

The first to perform was Steven Clark. Steven showed us some very impressive coin moves in a routine in which he seems to produce coins from everywhere. We were all impressed with the talent he showed at such a young age.

Next to perform was Dayn Holbrook, or “The Great Dayn.” Dayn brought a huge bag of magic tricks. He performed several different things including: card manipulation, an ambitious card routine, vanishing some silks in a bag, linking ropes, a sponge ball routine, and a zombie ball. Dayn displayed great excitement and enthusiasm for magic.

The third audition was Marshall Turner. Marshall showed us some rope magic. He performed a clever routine about three bears and another about a snake and some eggs.

The last to perform was Kent Bartlett. For his first trick, Kent had a card selected from a deck. Somehow, the cards changed into blank faces and again into the ace of spaces. For his second trick, Kent had a card selected from a deck with a hole punched through it. The card was replaced in the deck and a lock was put through the hole in the deck. Somehow the selected card disappeared from the deck and ended up in his pocket.

Congratulations to all four individuals for being brave enough to stand up in from of everybody and audition for membership in our Ring. Based on their performances, all four individuals were granted membership in the club. Please look for these new members in our next meeting and extend a welcome hand to each one.

Member Spotlight

Our spotlight magician for September was Anthony White. In an attempt to get to know our members better, one of our members gets the opportunity to perform magic for first 10-15 minutes of each meeting. Anthony’s first trick was to pull a rope through Brandon Johnson’s body. It sounds painful, but was really quite harmless. Anthony then performed a card prediction effect. For his final trick, Anthony’s toy turtle “Cecil” found a selected card from four piles. However, it was clear that Cecil had cheated because he has a copy of the selected card up his sleeve, or rather printed on his belly since turtles don’t have sleeves.

Thanks to Anthony for showing us some of his magic. Anyone who has seen Anthony perform knows that he has a terrific and witty sense of humor. Next month, Ed Rock will be in the spotlight.
