On June 20th we met at Harry Schumann’s house for our annual family picnic. Dinner was great! We barbecued in Harry’s backyard. The club provided the hamburgers and hotdogs and our members brought various potluck dishes.

Annual Picnic at the Schumann's house

Following dinner we held a short children’s show, with just two brave kids daring to perform magic in front of the group. The first to perform was Blaine Wanner. I think Blaine’s dad Eric was more nervous than he was.

Jessica White

Following Blaine’s performance, Jessica White (daughter of Anthony White) poured water into a glass. With a waive of her hand, Jessica turned the water into an ice cube.

Following the children’s performance, several adults performed some short tricks. Anthony White did a card trick with 12 cards. Anthony had a spectator choose one card. In the end, all of the cards were the same, except for the card the spectator selected, which happened to be the only 10 of clubs in the entire deck.

Ed Rock

Following Anthony’s performance, Ed Rock showed the group a deck of cards that used to be Harry Houdini’s (or at least that is what he said). He had two spectators choose a card by just looking at a card. Somehow Ed was able to read the spectators minds and tell them which card they had selected.

Harry Schumann and Lewey the duck.

Harry Schumann was our last performer for the evening. Harry introduced us to Lewey his pet duck. Harry asked a member of the audience to open to a page in his book and select one word. This duck was amazing because it was somehow able to tell Harry what the word was. The children sure enjoyed Harry’s performance. It was obvious from watching Harry perform for children why he has been so successful at performing magic professionally. Following the performances, Steve Simbeck from Showplace Magic handed out grab bags for the children who attended the picnic. Steve then auctioned off several extra grab bags and donated the proceeds to the club. Thanks as always to Steve for his total support of IBM Ring 193.

We concluded the evening with a short magic swap meet. Ron Seward demonstrated a trick where he changed one-dollar bills into 1 million-dollar bills. However, to avoid any unnecessary run-ins with the IRS, Ron had to change them back. Ron’s handling was great and very convincing.

Overall the evening was very enjoyable. A special thanks to Harry Schumann for being generous enough to let us use his yard and his pool.
