MEETING MINUTES:
Steve Simbeck was the Magician in Charge and his topic was on
Vanishes & Transpositions. Of course this simple topic probably
covers about 70 percent of all magic. So Steve had plenty of things
he could talk about. He started with vanishing coins. However, he
pointed out that most vanishes are just the preludes to a production.
In other words, a transposition. However, the most amazing effects
are those where an object disappears and never returns. The
disappearance of a salt shaker at a restaurant is more effective if
the salt shaker stays vanished. If the salt shaker is reproduced then
the effect becomes just another trick. Yet, if the salt shaker is
gone forever, then the effect enters the realm of magic.
Steve demonstrated such an effect with a ring on his thumb. The
thumb was then forced into his other hand that was in a fist. At this
point everyone was thinking he was using a thumb tip. Yet, when he
pulled his thumb out the ring was gone. Plus, when he opened both
hands no ring was found nor was a thumb tip found. He showed
everything openly. Those that were in attendance became privy to how
he accomplished the effect. His method of vanishing the ring goes to
show that some of the simplest methods are still the best.
